What should we wear!?
Some simple suggestions of what to wear. Feel free to ignore these tips as you see fit.
Generally in your photos you will want to stand out, but at the same time you don’t want your clothing to take all of the attention. When you look at your pictures you want your faces to be the first thing that you notice. Your clothes define you as a person, but what you don’t want is them being center of attention.
CHOOSE A BASIC COLOR PALETTE
It is always a good idea to start off with a certain color palette. This can be anything ranging from all pastels, to grey and white, from a plethora of colors to neutral, etc. If you do decide on a strong/vivid/colorful palette such as pink, orange, blue etc, it is always best to balance it out with a neutral color such as beige, grey, cream, navy blue, etc. You can also use the same colors but with a different tonal range!
CO-ORDINATE
After you have chosen your color palette it’s time to mix and match everyone! Try not to have everyone looking identical because you want your personalities to shine through and you definitely do not want to end up looking like clones! So for example, if we have one person wearing a baby blue shirt, the child can have that same tone of blue clothing on; even if it is something as small as shoes, a hair band, or hat.
LAYER
Layering can be lots of fun! You don’t necessarily need to keep it simple by something like jeans and a shirt. This can add a little something extra to an outfit and can really compliment it. Layering works really well when it is different material and textures working together such as wool, lace, denim, frills, ruffles, etc. Layering can also be so elegant when on girls. For example: tights, frilly socks, and boots. The frill in that combo would add some extra depth right there. You can also accompany that by a skirt with frills and a plain cardigan to balance it out. Just remember not to overdo it.
ACCESSORIES & PROPS
Accessories can make or break an outfit! A beautiful hat, necklaces, earrings, flowers in your hair, headbands, etc. Just be aware of the colors because you don’t want them to clash with your outfit. Props are also sometimes a good idea. If you have something you wish to bring with you, we can definitely try and incorporate it all together.
ACCESSORIES & EXTRA ITEMS
Don’t be afraid to accessorize! Just don’t over do it. Feel free to include the following:
- Hats
- Jewelry
- Earrings
- Teddy Bears (if your child has one they can’t part with)
- Headbands
HIM & HER CLOTHING
What seems to work really well is when a woman dresses in something feminine. For example a beautiful lace/frilly dress, skirts, something that will flow, etc. Essentially something that is ‘girlie’. Accompanied next to man who is dressed in, lets say, trousers and a shirt. This can really make the woman look gorgeous standing next to a well dressed man. However if this is not your ideal dress sense, jeans and a nice shirt would also work.
GIRLS || Floral Dresses – Ruffled/Floral/Pattern Skirts – Boots – Polka Dot/Striped Leggings – Colored Leggings or Tights – Jean Jackets – Floral – Vintage – Shawls – Pastel Colors – Frills – Frilly Socks – Jean Shorts with Thick White Tights – Cardigans
BOYS || Smart Shirts – Jeans – Wool Jumpers – Grandpa Style (flat) Hats – Smart Suits – Braces Outfits – Vintage Outfits – v-neck Jumpers with Patterned Shirt underneath
WHAT TO AVOID
Now that we have established what to wear, it’s time to talk about what NOT to wear. The following list can break or ruin any outfit so I highly, highly suggest to steer well clear of:
- Lots of different & heavy patterns
- Big/large amount of solid black clothing (ie. black shirt)
- Logos/words/writing (this includes shoes)
- Pictures on clothing
- Bright (almost neon) Colors
- Bright red as it can be very prominent and can stand out too much
- Everyone in identical clothing
Normal every day clothes is the best way to go. Keep it semi-smart, pretty, and just a tad dressed up.
